Benediktbeuern Abbey

13 June

The Benediktbeuern Abbey, which was founded around 739 AD by Saint Boniface, was a clerical and cultural centre of the Benedictine Order until its secularization in 1803. In 1930 the Salesians of Don Bosco revived monastic life. Over the centuries the monks transformed the the Loisach-Kochelsee wetlands into a unique landscape with pastures, extensively used meadows and natural upland moors. The focus of the nature preservation activities include, the improvement of the water balance, the  renaturation of approx. 200 ha of upland moors, restoring wetlands by daming up ditches, targeted species and habitat preservartion, flood protection through the large buffering capcity of moors, ground water preservation throughthe filration effect.
